AI Video Resolution Cost: How Resolution and Duration Change Credit Use
Two levers move your AI video bill: how long each clip runs and what resolution you render it at. Duration behaves predictably almost everywhere, but resolution splits tools into two camps that budget very differently. Knowing which camp your model sits in decides whether a jump to 1080p is effectively free or more than doubles your monthly credit draw.
Duration is the reliable multiplier
Duration scales credits close to linearly across most major providers. Runway's API documentation prices its video models in credits per second, so a ten-second render costs twice a five-second one at the same settings. Luma's per-clip pricing follows the same pattern: a Ray 2 clip that costs 160 credits at five seconds and 720p costs 320 credits at ten. OpenAI's Sora 2 API bills per second of generated video as well. The practical takeaway is to trim clips to the shortest length that serves the shot. Because duration is close to linear, every second you cut returns a proportional share of credits, and those savings compound across a month of production. Treat clip length as your most predictable cost dial, and set it before you touch resolution, since resolution behaves very differently depending on the tool.
Resolution splits tools into two camps
Resolution is where budgets diverge. In the first camp, the per-second rate is flat regardless of output resolution. Runway's Gen-4 line works this way, with Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits per second and Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second whether you render 720p or 1080p. In the second camp, resolution is an explicit price tier. On Runway's API, the third-party Seedance 2.0 model charges 36 credits per second at 480p and 720p, 40 at 1080p, and 150 at 4K. OpenAI's Sora 2 Pro is tiered the same way, at 0.30 dollars per second at 720p, 0.50 at 1024p, and 0.70 at 1080p. Some tiers are mild and some are steep, so the label alone tells you little. Before you commit budget, find the rate card for the exact model and resolution you plan to call, because one provider can host both camps at once.
How steep the resolution jump really is
When resolution is tiered, the size of the jump varies wildly, and quality toggles can stack on top of it. On Runway's API, Seedance 2.0 barely moves from 36 to 40 credits per second between 720p and 1080p, then nearly quadruples to 150 at 4K. On Sora 2 Pro, the step from 720p to 1080p more than doubles the per-second rate, from 0.30 dollars to 0.70. Luma shows both patterns in one lineup: on Ray 2, a five-second clip costs 160 credits at 720p and 170 at 1080p, a small premium, but its Ray 3 model bills HDR at four times the SDR rate, 320 credits versus 1,280 for a five-second 720p clip. The lesson is to price the specific jump you plan to make. On some models 1080p is nearly free, while on others a single toggle quadruples every clip you generate that month.
A monthly scenario: same clip, different tiers
Picture one five-second clip you plan to produce forty times a month, and follow it across tiers. On Runway's flat Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits per second, each clip is 25 credits at any resolution, so the month costs 1,000 credits at 720p or 1080p alike, and stretching every clip to ten seconds doubles it to 2,000. Measured against Runway's plan tiers of 625, 2,250, and 9,500 credits a month, the five-second plan overruns Standard but fits Pro. Run the same plan on Luma's Ray 2 and resolution barely matters, 6,400 credits at 720p versus 6,800 at 1080p, yet doubling duration still doubles the bill. On Sora 2 Pro, those forty five-second clips cost 60 dollars at 720p and 140 dollars at 1080p, so the resolution choice alone more than doubles the month. Same clip, three models, three different levers doing the damage.
Do not forget rollover and gating
Two more rules shape the real monthly number. First, unused credits may not carry over. On Runway, Standard and Pro monthly credits reset and do not roll over, Max rolls over up to one month of unused credits, and separately purchased add-on credits never expire, with a 1,000-credit minimum purchase. On Luma, purchased top-up credits are valid for twelve months and roll over while monthly subscription credits do not, and Luma's published example prices a 4K upscale of a five-second Ray 2 Flash clip at 20 additional credits. Second, some tools gate resolution behind the plan itself rather than pricing it per second: Pika's free tier limits output to 480p with a watermark and 80 monthly video credits, while its paid tiers unlock all resolutions and watermark-free downloads. Build a buffer for retries, confirm your rollover rules, and verify current rates on each provider's official page before committing budget.
